Comments:
The "M" body style (also known as 0000) was inspired by 1960s luthiers who converted old Martin F-series archtops into flat-tops. These guitars combined a large 16-inch lower bout with the shallower depth of a 000 model. Martin officially added the M-38 to its catalogue in 1977, followed by the slightly less ornate M-36 in 1978. The M-36 is famously associated with Nashville session players who value its balanced EQ and clear projection in the studio. It is often described as a "Goldilocks" guitar—offering more bass than an OM but less "boom" than a Dreadnought. While it was a mainstay of the Standard Series for decades, Martin recently announced it would be discontinued from the standard lineup, making existing models more collectible.
