Comments:
The S-100 Polara is often referred to as "Guild's SG" due to its lightweight double-cutaway mahogany body and similar aesthetic. Originally introduced in 1963 with a "batwing" body and built-in kickstand, it was redesigned in 1970 into the more recognizable offset SG-style shape used today. The model gained legendary status in the 1990s as the primary instrument for Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, making it a staple of the Seattle grunge sound. Unlike the Gibson SG of the same era, 1970s Guild S-100s were known for high-quality features like HB-1 pickups, which are highly regarded by modern enthusiasts for their clarity and articulation. The 1977 model features a mini-toggle phase switch that allows for unique, thinner "out-of-phase" tones when both pickups are engaged.
