The Les Paul Special was first introduced by Gibson in 1955 as a step up from the bare-bones Les Paul Junior, bridging the gap to the more expensive Les Paul Standard. It retained the slab mahogany body construction of the Junior but added a second P-90 pickup for increased tonal versatility, along with binding on the fretboard. The distinctive "TV Yellow" finish was created to appear white on black-and-white televisions of the era, avoiding the excessive glare of actual white finishes under studio lights. The single-cutaway Special design made a popular return in reissues in later decades. This Les Paul Special was manufactured at the Nashville, Tennessee factory in 2024. It is part of the modern Gibson USA Les Paul Special production, which pays tribute to the simplicity and raw power of the original 1950s models.
