Introduced originally in 1955, the Les Paul Special bridged the gap between the budget-friendly student-grade Les Paul Junior and the premium carved-maple Goldtop. Unlike a standard Les Paul, the Special features no carved maple top. It relies entirely on a solid, un-chambered mahogany slab body, producing a distinctively punchy mid-range, aggressive bite, and legendary sustain. The single-cutaway design of this 1957 reissue represents the final full year of the original body style. By late 1958, Gibson transitioned the Les Paul Special to a double-cutaway design. This guitar is a precise historic replica of the flat-top, "slab" single-cut model. Rather than using artificial hand-distressing, the Murphy Lab ages the instrument through scientifically formulated chemical procedures to mimic the natural, microscopic weather-checking found on pristine vintage pieces. The Ultra Light Aging package represents the gentlest treatment tier. It pairs a thinly-sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer finish with light hardware patina, giving the guitar the subtle texture, character, and vibe of a 1950s instrument that has spent decades carefully preserved inside its case.
