The J-60 model had a relatively short initial production run from 1992 to 1998, with a limited reissue in 2013. It was developed by John Lowell when he worked at Gibson's acoustic division in the early 1990s and was designed as Gibson's answer to the classic Martin HD-28, featuring rosewood back and sides which is a rare occurrence for standard Gibson production acoustics. The J-60 stands out from Gibson's more common round-shouldered J-45 and J-50 models. It featured a square-shouldered design and utilized "1930's-style 'Advanced Bracing Pattern'" to enhance bass response and projection, a departure from the typical Gibson sound. The use of an ebony fingerboard and bridge further distinguished it as a premium, high-end instrument in the Gibson lineup.
