By using three smaller pieces, Martin could continue using their dwindling stock of this high-quality rosewood. It was designed with 1\/4\" top braces—thinner than the 5\/16\" braces used on the D-28 at the time—giving it a more resonant, bass-heavy character. It was the first Martin dreadnought to feature a bound fingerboard, a detail originally intended to position it as a more \"premium\" model than the D-28.
