He began building guitars in the late 1980s, initially using traditional materials before transitioning to innovative metal construction. In the mid-1990s, he shifted focus to all-aluminium instruments, citing the material's extreme stability and superior tonal and sustain qualities. Goulding's instruments are individually machined from two solid billets of aluminium and then hand-finished. A hallmark of his work is the absence of plastic; nearly every part, including the neck and body, is hand-machined from metal such as aluminium, brass, or stainless steel.
