Comments:
The J-185 was introduced in 1951 as a more compact alternative to the big SJ-200. Only about 900 were produced during this decade, making vintage originals extremely rare and highly coveted by collectors. Despite being considered by many as Gibson's finest post-WWII flat-top, it was discontinued in 1959 and remained out of production for over 30 years until reissued in 1990. It shares its Sitka top and jumbo shape with the SJ-200 but features a 16” lower bout and a shorter 24.75" scale length, which provides lower string tension and easier playability, as well as different cosmetic appointments. The maple back and sides provide a quick note decay and high-end shimmer, making it a favorite for studio recording and singer-songwriters who need clarity without overwhelming bass. The "Demo" engraving on the back of the headstock indicates this guitar was destined for artist demonstration / promotional purposes.
