The ES-335 was the world's first commercial semi-hollowbody guitar, designed by Ted McCarty to bridge the gap between the "warmth" of a hollowbody and the "sustain/feedback resistance" of a solidbody. Since 2019, all ES-335 production moved from the closed Memphis facility to the Gibson Nashville factory. Introduced as a more affordable, "player-focused" alternative to the high-gloss models, the satin nitrocellulose finish allows the wood to breathe and age differently, often feeling "faster" on the neck.
